make new house keys

How often & when should you change your locks?

Your locks should be changed whenever you move into a new home or any time you suspect someone you don’t know/trust may have access to your home.

Unlike a forcible break-in, someone with a copy of your key can come and go undetected until you either notice missing items or, worse, discover and confront them in your home.

One way to change your locks is to have them re-keyed—changing the inside pinning so the old key no longer works and a new, differently cut key will work. Another way is to replace the locks entirely so the key for the old locks won’t fit in the keyhole.

There are options for upgrading the security level of your existing locks and brands and security levels can vary. Tell your locksmith what you want to achieve and ask for your options.

Door Lock Rekey

Door Lock Rekey and Repair | Home – Auto – Business

Lost keys, broken or worn out locks that stick or won’t turn? Rather than replacing the entire door lock knob or handle, the quicker and more affordable option is to repair or rekey the existing lock. This can be done by removing and replacing the existing lock cylinder with a new one or just replacing the pins inside the lock cylinder.

Lock Cylinder Replacement

Technicians can remove the existing lock cylinder form the knob or handles and then replace it with a new cylinder. They can either make you new keys for the lock or set up the new cylinder pins to work with your existing keys.

Rekey Door Lock

Another option is rather than replacing the entire lock cylinder, technicians can remove the existing cylinder and then just replace the springs and pins within the cylinder so that it works like new. Again, the technician can either set up the repaired cylinder with new keys or rekey the cylinder to work with your existing keys.

fresh wood door lock install

How To Do a Fresh Lock Installation on Wood & Metal Doors

Replacing an existing door lock and handle is a fairly simple process if you have the right tools and correct hardware. But what do you do if you want to install a lock on a new door or on a door that never had a lock, handle or knob? A fresh installation will require cutting and drilling both the door and into the door-frame. This process will require the right tools and precise measurement and drilling; any mistakes could end up being very costly. Listed below are the basic step for a fresh wood door lock install.

Tools needed for a fresh lock installation (wood door):

  • Hammer
  • 1” chisel
  • 2-1/8″ hole saw
  • 1” hole saw
  • 1” spade bit
  • Small drill bits
  • Electric drill/screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Template
  • Tarp

Steps for a wood door fresh lock installation:

  1. Lay down a tarp. While not necessary, it’s recommended that you start by laying down a tarp on the floor under the area where you will be working to make the cleanup of wood chips and dust much easier.
  2. Measure and mark your cuts. Most locks will come with a template to show you where to install the lock. There are also lock installation kits that you can purchase from any home improvement store that you can use as a guide for the lock installation.
  3. Cut a hole for the lock and/or knob. Once you’ve marked where you need to drill, you’ll need to use a power drill with a hole saw bit. If installing on a metal door it’s recommended that you go slow, use a variable speed drill, and make sure the bit you use is designed for cutting metal. Use a pilot tip on your how saw, cut through one side until the pilot bit pokes through and then, using the hole as a guide, complete the hole by cutting through from the other side of the door.
  4. Drill hole in the door edge. Using a spade drill bit you will next need to start a hole for the lock bolt by cutting into the edge of the door. Make sure you drill at the correct and straight angle. You can then use the 1” hole saw to complete the all the way through for a nice clean cut.
  5. Mortise area for the faceplate. Using a hammer and wood chisel you will need to cut a recess into the door edge around the bolt hole to install the lock faceplate.
  6. Install the faceplate and bolt. Drill pilot holes for the faceplate screws so that you don’t split the wood. and install the faceplate and bolt. Make sure the faceplate fits snugly and is flush with the door edge.
  7. Install the lock and/or knob. Install the door knob and lock making sure everything lines up correctly and then using your electric or hand screwdriver tighten the screws making sure that the screws are on the inside and not outside of the door ????
  8. Install the strike plate. You will need to measure and mark where on the door jam you will drill the holes and install the faceplate. Drill pilot holes for the strike plate screws so that you don’t split the wood jam when you put in the screws.

The instructions above were specifically for a wood door. Metal doors with a wood core may be a very similar install but commercial metal door may require different steps and tools.

Discount Locksmith now providing service in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Discount Locksmith LLC, a mobile locksmith company based out of Mesa, Arizona, has now expanded into New Mexico and started providing locksmith services in Albuquerque.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – March 11, 2016 – PRLog — Discount Locksmith, a new locksmith company based out of Mesa, Arizona, which began operations at the start of 21016 announced that this week they have started providing mobile locksmith service in the city of Albuquerque and surrounding New Mexico area. Discount Locksmith started a couple month ago by providing servicing to the greater Metro Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona area. “We’re quickly expanding and Alburquerque was the next best area for us to provide service.”  says JP Drissen, CEO of Discount Locksmith LLC. “We’re offering a unique pricing and discount model of business that so far has been hugely successful and appreciated by our customers. Our internet special pricing provides customers savings that are over 50% off the regular rates of locksmith services.”

Discount Locksmith believes that offering customers 50% savings on the total cost of their service simply by requesting they write a short review of the service they received on social media is a great benefit to both parties. Discount Locksmith is able to steeply reduce their lead generation costs by having happy, satisfied customers share their experience on our social media sites. Then, rather than pay for traditional advertising we pass those savings directly to the customer who is then happy with receiving a huge discount on the service they receive which, many times can add up to $100 or more!

Discount Locksmith LLC expects this new clear pricing and discount pricing service business model to benefit them as they expand into New Mexico. “We’ve partnered with some great independent technicians in the Albuquerque area who are currently working with our existing Discount Locksmith technicians. We’re training them to not only provide professional locksmith service, but just as importantly, great customer service. Beyond pricing, it’s our attention to the customer that separates us from other service providers and we want to make sure we continue to provide that same great service experience as we expand into Albuquerque and the rest or New Mexico.”

Discount Locksmith offer locksmith services for auto, home and business 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their goal is to provide fast, professional service and, in the case of an emergency lockout, have an average customer on-site response time of only 15 minutes. Discount Locksmith is now actively seeking new locksmith technicians in the Albuquerque area and nationwide.  Any locksmith technicians in Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, and Denver, or any highly motivated individual who is looking for a new career with high income potential, is encouraged to contact Discount Locksmith for more information about becoming a Discount Locksmith partner technician.
