Preliminary Preparations for Becoming a Locksmith

Pursuing a locksmith career doesn’t require rigorous requirements, but this field can be just as competitive as any other career. In that note, having further training and certification is a huge advantage to be successful in becoming a locksmith.

But first, the following are ways you may consider to do as preliminary preparations for becoming a locksmith.

Career Research

Does your state require you to have an official license?

It is very important to have significant knowledge before pursuing a locksmith career. Consider researching detailed requirements for your state because some may require you to acquire a license before you can proceed to practice the job.

How many hours does a locksmith work?

Locksmith’s working hours may vary. Some locksmiths work during the usual business hours if they are working in a shop. On-site visits to their customers are also possible. Whether you need to assist a customer who is locked out of a house and building or could be on-site to install locks, as a locksmith, you have to expect to visit customers on-site and the majority of the time, working hours are an “on-call” schedule.

Being prepared to pick up emergency calls outside of regular business hours is necessary when pursuing a locksmith career. In fact, the most successful locksmiths usually spend around 60-80 hours per week on locksmithing tasks. For the self-employed locksmiths, on top of locksmithing hours of duties, they also spend another 20-40 hours per week for administrative responsibilities and to market themselves.

Although locksmiths are on-call and available many hours a day and most days of the week, it is not as hectic as any other careers that can consume all your time. Locksmiths can still enjoy and have relaxed days.

What are the variations of a locksmith’s job?

Becoming a locksmith requires a wide range of skills. Installation and repair of locks for automobiles, safes, houses, and buildings, to name a few. Other forms of assistance, such as duplicating keys, are also part of locksmithing duties.

How much can a locksmith make?

Just like any other job, locksmiths earning can grow over time as they progress experiences and expand their skills. The basic annual salary for locksmiths, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is $37,560 (as of May 2012). Employment in this field is assessed slower than average because it is only predicted to grow at 7% between 2012 and 2022. Beginners or trainees often start at a minimum wage.

Independent contractor technicians can make about $50,000-$100,000/year! They make more income because their focus is only on locksmithing while a company works to market them and fulfill administrative duties. Working with an established locksmith company that caters to marketing and administrative duties would be ideal as you advance your locksmithing career!

Consider Obtaining a High School Diploma

Becoming a locksmith is definitely not an easy job. Receiving basic education will give you the fundamental knowledge in understanding more progressive mechanical precepts a locksmith job entails. The majority of states would require you to at least obtain your high school diploma to qualify as a professional locksmith.

Improve your Skills

A locksmith career is all about a broad range of skills. Honing it, and improving these skills further will help you to be a more successful and in-demand locksmith.

Good eye-hand coordination and spatial thinking skills are necessary for locksmith duties. You can improve these by enrolling at your community college if you are already a graduate or taking courses such as basic electronics, physics, carpentry, metalwork, or mechanical drawing if you are still in High School. Gaining as much hands-on experience that you could get would be really helpful.

Experience is always the best teacher so, if you decide to take a formal training program, undergoing apprenticeship as well will provide you with both specialized/technical and administrative tasks. It will also cover all aspects of the locksmith profession through its hands-on training! Even though most apprenticeships are unpaid, it is still beneficial for you to become a locksmith successfully. With apprenticeship on your portfolio, you can get more chances of becoming a professional locksmith!

Exemplifying sufficient customer service skills are also needed. Eventually, you would need marketing abilities as well if you plan to venture on your own locksmithing business in the future.

Locksmiths generally do not need a specialized degree, but completing a formal training program is ideal for most locksmiths who are eyeing to be successful in the field.

Indeed, becoming a locksmith requires a wide range of skills that you have to continue improving over time.

Is it important to gain experience first from an established locksmith business?

All newbie in every career needs to gain experience and establish their portfolio. Most companies would likely consider hiring applicants who have experience in the job they are applying to. It is the same for a locksmith career. Working for an established locksmith business in the early stages of your career is an advantage.

You can search and check various companies or businesses such as Department Stores, Security Equipment Manufacturers, or any that at least cater services like key-cutting. These businesses would likely offer you at least an entry-level experience to kick-off your career’s early stage.

make new house keys

How often & when should you change your locks?

Your locks should be changed whenever you move into a new home or any time you suspect someone you don’t know/trust may have access to your home.

Unlike a forcible break-in, someone with a copy of your key can come and go undetected until you either notice missing items or, worse, discover and confront them in your home.

One way to change your locks is to have them re-keyed—changing the inside pinning so the old key no longer works and a new, differently cut key will work. Another way is to replace the locks entirely so the key for the old locks won’t fit in the keyhole.

There are options for upgrading the security level of your existing locks and brands and security levels can vary. Tell your locksmith what you want to achieve and ask for your options.

fresh wood door lock install

How To Do a Fresh Lock Installation on Wood & Metal Doors

Replacing an existing door lock and handle is a fairly simple process if you have the right tools and correct hardware. But what do you do if you want to install a lock on a new door or on a door that never had a lock, handle or knob? A fresh installation will require cutting and drilling both the door and into the door-frame. This process will require the right tools and precise measurement and drilling; any mistakes could end up being very costly. Listed below are the basic step for a fresh wood door lock install.

Tools needed for a fresh lock installation (wood door):

  • Hammer
  • 1” chisel
  • 2-1/8″ hole saw
  • 1” hole saw
  • 1” spade bit
  • Small drill bits
  • Electric drill/screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Template
  • Tarp

Steps for a wood door fresh lock installation:

  1. Lay down a tarp. While not necessary, it’s recommended that you start by laying down a tarp on the floor under the area where you will be working to make the cleanup of wood chips and dust much easier.
  2. Measure and mark your cuts. Most locks will come with a template to show you where to install the lock. There are also lock installation kits that you can purchase from any home improvement store that you can use as a guide for the lock installation.
  3. Cut a hole for the lock and/or knob. Once you’ve marked where you need to drill, you’ll need to use a power drill with a hole saw bit. If installing on a metal door it’s recommended that you go slow, use a variable speed drill, and make sure the bit you use is designed for cutting metal. Use a pilot tip on your how saw, cut through one side until the pilot bit pokes through and then, using the hole as a guide, complete the hole by cutting through from the other side of the door.
  4. Drill hole in the door edge. Using a spade drill bit you will next need to start a hole for the lock bolt by cutting into the edge of the door. Make sure you drill at the correct and straight angle. You can then use the 1” hole saw to complete the all the way through for a nice clean cut.
  5. Mortise area for the faceplate. Using a hammer and wood chisel you will need to cut a recess into the door edge around the bolt hole to install the lock faceplate.
  6. Install the faceplate and bolt. Drill pilot holes for the faceplate screws so that you don’t split the wood. and install the faceplate and bolt. Make sure the faceplate fits snugly and is flush with the door edge.
  7. Install the lock and/or knob. Install the door knob and lock making sure everything lines up correctly and then using your electric or hand screwdriver tighten the screws making sure that the screws are on the inside and not outside of the door ????
  8. Install the strike plate. You will need to measure and mark where on the door jam you will drill the holes and install the faceplate. Drill pilot holes for the strike plate screws so that you don’t split the wood jam when you put in the screws.

The instructions above were specifically for a wood door. Metal doors with a wood core may be a very similar install but commercial metal door may require different steps and tools.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – March 11, 2016 – PRLog — Discount Locksmith, a new locksmith company based out of Mesa, Arizona, which began operations at the start of 21016 announced that this week they have started providing mobile locksmith service in the city of Albuquerque and surrounding New Mexico area. Discount Locksmith started a couple month ago by providing servicing to the greater Metro Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona area. “We’re quickly expanding and Alburquerque was the next best area for us to provide service.”  says JP Drissen, CEO of Discount Locksmith LLC. “We’re offering a unique pricing and discount model of business that so far has been hugely successful and appreciated by our customers. Our internet special pricing provides customers savings that are over 50% off the regular rates of locksmith services.”

Discount Locksmith believes that offering customers 50% savings on the total cost of their service simply by requesting they write a short review of the service they received on social media is a great benefit to both parties. Then, rather than pay for traditional advertising we pass those savings directly to the customer who is then happy with receiving a huge discount on the service they receive which, many times can add up to $100 or more!

Discount Locksmith LLC expects this new clear pricing and discount pricing service business model to benefit them as they expand into New Mexico. “We’ve partnered with some great independent technicians in the Albuquerque area who are currently working with our existing Discount Locksmith technicians. We’re training them to not only provide professional locksmith service, but just as importantly, great customer service. Beyond pricing, it’s our attention to the customer that separates us from other service providers and we want to make sure we continue to provide that same great service experience as we expand into Albuquerque and the rest or New Mexico.”

Discount Locksmith offer locksmith services for auto, home and business 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
